Location
Piestewa Peak, formerly known as Squaw Peak, is part of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, centrally located in Phoenix, Arizona. The main access point is the Piestewa Peak Trailhead off Lincoln Drive and Squaw Peak Drive, making it one of the most accessible urban hikes in the Valley.
Who Can Access
The trail is open to hikers and trail runners. It is not suited for bikers due to its steep, rocky stair-step nature, and it’s not typically used by climbers either. Because of its challenging ascent and popularity, it attracts both casual fitness hikers and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Dogs Welcome
Dogs are not allowed on the main Summit Trail to Piestewa Peak. This restriction helps preserve the trail’s safety and condition, as the climb is strenuous, narrow in places, and heavily trafficked.
Difficulty
The Summit Trail at Piestewa Peak is considered difficult. Though it’s relatively short, it has a relentless climb with over 1,200 feet of elevation gain in less than 1.5 miles. The rocky, uneven steps and exposure make it physically demanding, especially in hot weather. Good fitness and plenty of water are essential.
Distance
The Summit Trail is about 2.1 miles round trip (out-and-back). Despite the short distance, the steep ascent makes it feel like a serious workout. There are also several connecting trails in the preserve for those seeking longer, less steep routes.
Views
From the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views of the Phoenix metropolitan area and surrounding desert mountains. It’s one of the best vantage points in the city, especially at sunrise and sunset when the desert sky glows with color. On clear days, you can see as far as the distant Estrella and White Tank Mountains.
