
Location
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a large desert habitat located in and around Scottsdale, Arizona. It covers over 30,000 acres of protected land including parts of the McDowell Mountains and stretches of Sonoran Desert.
Who Can Access
The Preserve is open to a variety of outdoor users. Hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, and horseback riders can all enjoy the network of non-motorized, multi-use trails. Guided hikes and education programs are also offered.
Dogs Welcome
Yes — dogs are allowed on the trails in the Preserve, but must be kept on a leash. This helps protect both pets and wildlife.
Difficulty
The difficulty of trails in the Preserve spans a wide range. There are very easy, family-friendly, accessible nature trails, as well as steep, rocky, more strenuous trails challenging for experienced hikers.
Distance
With over 180-230 miles of trails in total, there are options for short walks (under 1 mile), moderate hikes (3-6 miles), and longer and more remote loops if you want a full day out.
Views
The Preserve offers dramatic desert scenery: saguaros, rocky ridges, washes, steep mountain slopes, and sweeping vistas of Scottsdale and the surrounding desert valleys. Sunrise and sunset views are especially memorable. In addition, there are excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and for viewing desert flora in bloom during the right seasons.
